UP policeman's murder

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to go for a second post-mortem of senior police officer Zia-ul-Haq who was killed along with two others on Saturday in the constituency of former Uttar Pradesh minister, Raja Bhaiya.

A 10-member CBI team will be in Kunda to collect details from the chief medical officer of Pratapgarh on the post mortem of Mr Haq. If the report is not satisfactory the investigating agency is likely to press for a second test. The team will also be questioning three suspended police officers among eight accused whose roles are being investigated in the case.

The former minister faces arrest after the investigating agency booked him and registered four different cases yesterday. The CBI was formally given the charge of investigating the case yesterday.
The politician will be investigated for criminal conspiracy. He was forced to resign from office on Tuesday after he was accused in a police case of criminal conspiracy.

Parveen Azad, the widow of the police officer, says her husband was killed on the orders of Raja Bhaiya, whose real name is Raghuraj Pratap Singh. She says he could influence the investigation and has demanded that he be arrested immediately.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav told NDTV on Wednesday night that "whichever minister has been involved in wrongdoing, we will definitely order an enquiry." (Watch)

The assurance lacks credibility. Despite the enormity of the charges against him, the police has yet to question or arrest Raja Bhaiya.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Zia-ul-Haq was killed when he arrived in Pratapgarh to investigate the shooting of the village headman and his brother. An angry mob confronted the police man. (Read: How Zia-ul-Haq was killed)

A post-mortem report shared by the Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday shared explicit details of how he was attacked - there serious injuries on his head, several ribs were fractured, injuries prove he was dragged for several metres on the ground and he was shot in the chest.

His revolver and the bullet that killed him are missing.

Meanwhile, Mrs Azad has demanded that Mr Haq's rank should be upgraded and given a bravery award. She said, "I had said that his rank should be upgraded from the DSP to Superintendent of Police (SP) and then given a bravery award because he died as a martyr. She also wants the place where he died be named as Zia- ul-Haq Nagar.
